Celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day on September 4th and Be A Proud Voice for Country.
As an Aboriginal organisation we support Aboriginal communities to lift adult literacy levels through a community-led approach.
Between 40-70% of Aboriginal adults have low English language literacy. In some locations it can be as high as 90%.
Low literacy affects every aspect of a person’s life, from reading a medication label to sending a text message.
The good news is, communities across the country are turning things around.
Recently we celebrated student graduations across our adult literacy Campaigns in Mt Druitt, Tennant Creek, Yarrabah and Coonamble. A crew from ABC News were there to capture the celebrations in Mt Druitt.
So far more than 460 adult students have completed training. Lifting literacy lifts the entire community.
Here are some ways you can support lifting Indigenous literacy:
- Consider making a monthly or on-off donation that will help more Aboriginal adults improve their basic literacy skills, including reading, writing, learning and digital literacy skills.
- Watch and share the ABC News clip with your family and friends.
- Listen to the voices of people like our Campaign Coordinator, Nadine Cannon. Nadine is a Traditional Custodian and local emerging elder living on country in Yarrabah. Check out her collaboration with photographer Leanne Hardy – Finding Mussha.
